What is an emergency?

An emergency is an urgent, unexpected, and usually dangerous situation that poses an immediate risk to health, life, property, or environment and always requires immediate action.

Rowland Scaffold offer an emergency scaffolding service which runs 24 hours, 365 days of the year. Over the last 36 years we have erected many types of scaffolds for emergency works, some of them include the following: raking shores, dead shores, flying shores, temporary Roofs, general independent access scaffold, heavy duty independent scaffold, edge protection and handrail systems, cantilevered scaffolds, birdcage scaffolds, drop lift scaffolds and scaffolding runway track and pulley systems.

Due to the potential danger to our employees and to the general public, prior to ourselves carrying out any emergency scaffolding works, our management team first survey the site and consult with the client to ascertain as much information as possible regarding the potential hazards we could encounter whilst working on site. Our scaffold engineer is then consulted in order to establish the safest and most effective method to adopt in order to take control of the emergency.

Emergency Scaffolding Explained

Emergency Scaffolding can arise from a number of situations, for example, adverse weather conditions. Around 30 percent of our emergency projects are brought about by high winds. High winds can have a devastating effect on tall buildings, sometimes ripping off whole roofs and felling chimney stacks. Also, becoming more common nowadays are lightning strikes, in some cases lightning has been known to reduce steeples and even have the force to topple monuments, as was the case when we were called out to support the old Victorian cholera monument here in Sheffield a while ago.

With today’s global warming crisis, temperatures are rising at an alarming rate and wildfires can easily be started. These can very quickly get out of hand and lead to buildings being ignited. A very recent emergency which required our scaffolding services was to support the façade of semi-detached house in Maltby. The house had been a casualty of a nearby field fire and as a result was left in a very dangerous situation which also endangered the adjoining semi and the inhabitants within. Our scaffold ensured that the damaged building and the neighbour’s home was fully supported whilst demolition works could take place.

Another category which has a large percentage of callouts for us is “human negligence” Many times we are called out by the local authorities’ dangerous structures people to shore up/ support a building that has been left in a dangerous state following a car or lorry crashing into them. Last year we attended several such incidents throughout our region.

Not all emergency incidents caused by human negligence derive from vehicular damage. Some incidents occur when people carry out shoddy, unsafe work and leave the building in urgent need of our direct intervention. Very often load bearing walls in buildings are removed without the input or expert advice from a structural engineer, or sometimes the underpinning work has failed because the builder hasn’t carried out the shoring work correctly. In these scenarios, we would support the building by means of a raking shore or a dead shore, with additional kentledge placed on the raking shores for stability.

To name but a few clients who utilize our emergency services are as follows: Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, The University of Sheffield, Sheffield City Council, Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council and National Trust.

Thanks to the great team here at Rowlands the scaffold can be surveyed, quoted, designed and if required, erection can commence the very same day.
